Aristotle atomic theory date4/11/2024 Democritus also worked and wrote extensively in the void hypothesis made popular by Parmenides, and epistemology. There are a number of writings that include mention of Democritus and his personality, with many depictions of him laughing gracing artists' works, all largely due to his disdain for human error.Greek philosophers were 'all thought and no action' and did not feel the need to test their theories with reality via experiments and the scientific method. As a wealthy heir, Democritus is believed to have spent his inheritance on travel in order to learn from other cultures' scholars 1.4: Early Ideas about the Building Blocks of Matter is shared under a not declared license and was authored, remixed, and/or curated by LibreTexts. He believed all substances were made of small amounts of these four elements of matter. He thought that all materials on Earth were not made of atoms, but of the four elements, Earth, Fire, Water, and Air. While Democritus went largely unnoticed in Greece due to his work being more scientific than philosophic, his work attracted the attention of Aristotle born on 384 BC died on 322 BC Aristotle did not believe in the atomic theory and he taught so otherwise. He is also renowned for being a pioneer mathematics and geometry, experimenting and examining different plants and animals, being a proponent of the spherical earth hypothesis in astronomy and so much more. None of the Founding Fathersnot even Benjamin Franklin, the most scientific of themthought about. The United States has already celebrated its two-hundredth birthday, whereas the atomic theory is only about 175 years old. However while an intriguing concept, Democritus and Leucippus had no experimental evidence to prove this theory and it was solely based on their ideas.ĭespite not being able to formulate proof or being 100% accurate, Democritus's findings are still a huge influence on modern day science. The atomic, microscopic way of looking at matter is actually a fairly new development. Democritus also thought that were special particles inside humans called "Soul Atomos", he claimed that whenever a human died, the atoms that made them up were dispersed thoughout the world and created or inhabited other living things until they died again, restarting the cycle. He believed that Atomos were completely indestructible and they were all exactly the the same as well as Atomos being the reason why we experience different senses such as sight, touch, and so forth. Democritus called these particles "Atomos" meaning indivisible which is where we get the word atom from. As he pondered on this, Democritus wondered what would happen if sand broke down, what would that create and could it be broken down even further? He reasoned that if you kept cutting all matter in half, eventually you would reach a partical that you couldn't split anymore. While walking on a beach one day, Democritus thought of how pebbles broke down in order to create sand.
